July 31 is 30 years since the Soviet special police forces (OMON) carried out the Medininkai border post massacre killing officers guarding the border of the Republic of Lithuania. Minister of National Defence Arvydas Anušauskas and Commander of the Lithuanian Land Force Brig Gen Raimundas Vaikšnoras attended commemorative events at the Antakalnio Cemetery and Medininkai Border Post.

On 31 July 1991, at Medininkai border post on the border with Belarus, the Soviet OMON savagely killed seven officers on duty for the Motherland Republic of Lithuania: officers of the Aras Rapid Response Unit of the Police Department, Ministry of the Interior, Mindaugas Balavakas and Algimantas Juozakas, police officers of the Traffic Police Directorate of the Police Department Juozas Janonis and Algirdas Kazlauskas, inspectors of Vilnius Customs Post, Customs Department, Antanas Musteikis and Stanislovas Orlavičius. Ričardas Rabavičius died of gunshot wounds in the head at the hospital on August 2. The only severely injured officer doctors succeed in saving was customs officer Tomas Šernas.
