Šakalienė was placed on a list of sanctioned persons by China, along with eight other European Union parliamentarians, in response to EU sanctions against Chinese officials for the persecution of the Uighur minority. The sanctions include a ban on the entry of D. Šakalienė and her family members into China and Hong Kong.
