Minister of National Defence Robertas Kaunas met with U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker at the Berlin Security Conference. They discussed continuation of the U.S. military presence in Lithuania, hybrid threats and strengthening NATO’s Eastern Flank.
“The decisions made are the best testament to the U.S. commitment to Lithuania. Two battalions with tactical vehicles are on their way back to Lithuania and will kick off service in Pabradė soon. It is a result of focused Lithuania’s efforts. My position from the very beginning has been that Europe needs to take more responsibility for its security, and the U.S. will deliver on its commitments then. Military cooperation with the U.S. in specific areas is growing deeper all the time,” said Minister of National Defence R. Kaunas.
Ambassador M. Whitaker underlined Lithuania’s Host Nation Support and noted that the infrastructure already built or further developed in Lithuania was of exemplary quality.
“The Allies repeatedly stated at the Berlin Security Conference that Lithuania is recognised for its consistency, a clear direction and proper defence investment. The Allies appreciate Lithuania’s leadership in the NATO Alliance demonstrated by taking the responsibility for strengthening the security in the country and the region, Lithuania is ready to host additional U.S. forces and provide the infrastructure their presence requires – all of that is a clear contribution to NATO’s overall posture of deterrence,” said Minister after the Conference.
Other topics addressed at the meeting were the hybrid threats and Allied readiness to counter them. Minister pointed out the importance of an even more intense intelligence exchange on possible provocations, as well as the necessity of coordinated action.
When discussing air defence, Minister underscored Lithuania’s investment in national air defence capabilities while also noting that the collective NATO capabilities remain essential. The officials discussed support for Ukraine as well.
