Late in the afternoon of Friday, July 9, Ministers of National Defence and the Interior visited the area on the border with Belarus to see and assess the works of building a razor-wire fence begun by the Lithuanian Armed Forces in the morning.
“The Ministry of National Defence is responsive to all the needs caused by emergency situations. Today we have surveyed the situation on the border in person and we are satisfied with what we see. It is difficult and dangerous to surmount a razor-wire fence – the obstacle really has a suspensive effect,” said Minister of National Defence A. Anušauskas.
“Migrants have to understand and feel that traversing Lithuania is neither easy, nor quick, while we will take all the measures to not only impede the illegal crossing over into Lithuania as much as possible but also to ensure that their journey ends here and they are turned around back to their countries of origin immediately,” added Minister of the Interior Agnė Bilotaitė.
It was agree to build the fence as the number of migrants illegally crossing into Lithuania’s territory are not dropping. The task is completed in a close cooperation among the Ministry of National Defence, Ministry of the Interior and the State Border Guard Service.
