On October 4 Vice Minister of National Defence Margiris Abukevičius met with Ambassador of Slovakia to Lithuania HE Ladislav Babčan to discuss regional defence and security and share insights on the study by the National Cyber Security Centre into China-manufactured smart phones sold in Lithuania.
Vice Minister M. Abukevičius thanked Slovakia for the initiatives aimed at strengthening the Baltic security. He underscored both countries’ shared perception of security and defence environment and security threats and the resulting rationale to keep building on bilateral military cooperation and face the arising challenges together.
At the meeting held at the Ministry of national Defence, the officials also discussed the European Union defence planning, Exercise Zapad 2021 that wrapped in September, and the evacuation of the Afghans who had worked with the Lithuanian Armed Forces which took place in August.
Slovakia contributes an officer to the NATO Force Integration Unit (NFIU) in Vilnius, as well as military personnel and equipment to the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group in Latvia together with the other Visegrad countries as an effort to support the Baltic region security.
Lithuanian and Slovak military personnel have been also training together in Exercise Tobruq Legacy since 2015.
