The Bergepanzer-2 (BPz2) recovery tank is an advanced vehicle designed for level 2 repair on the battlefield: replacing components or recovery tasks. Its upgraded chassis is based on the Leopard-1 tank.
Acquisition of recovery tanks is one of the parts of the 155 mm PzH 2000 howitzer acquisition project. Two BPz2 have been overhauled and delivered already and the current two is what was remaining from the order. Bergepanzer-2 are upgraded on the basis of a contract signed with moderation of the NATO Support and Procurement Agency on modernization of four BPz2s in 2018.
The Defence Material Agency under the MoD is currently drafting a new contract to upgrade another batch of BPz2.
