Minister of National Defence Robertas Kaunas discussed regional security and strengthening NATO’s Eastern Flank in a meeting with Members of Congress of the United States David Bacon and Ed Case. Minister thanked the guests for the consistent support to Lithuania and the Baltic states. The U.S. finances the Baltic Security initiative and allocates 200 million US dollars for strengthening the Baltic defensive capabilities.
“Regardless of political views, Lithuania is underlined as an exemplary Ally at the U.S. Congress: we are valued as security providers rather than just security consumers. NATO is founded on mutual trust and collaboration and the U.S. and Lithuanian position is clear: peace is only possible through deterrence arising from collective strength. We have a unified view: a strong and resilient Europe within the NATO Alliance is share aim of Lithuania and the U.S.,” said Minister of National Defence Robertas Kaunas.
A major attention was dedicated to the recent security incidents in the region: airspace violations, threats posed by uncrewed aerial vehicles, and the necessity to strengthen drone and counter-drone capabilities. Minister underscored that russia remain an enduring and existential threat to NATO security, while provocations and airspace breeches were becoming more frequent.
Minister also pointed out Lithuania would continue investing in Host Nation Support infrastructure and create the best conditions possible for U.S. training and accommodation. Also, logistical capabilities will continue being strengthened and Host Nation Support provided in full extent.
Last autumn, infrastructure designed to improve training and lodging conditions for U.S. military personnel was unveiled in Pabradė. The project, along with the decision to expand the Host Nation Support Package and cover the costs of U.S. military presence in Lithuania is a clear proof of Lithuania’s commitment to strengthening NATO collective defence and deterrence.
One more topic discussed at the meeting was the Lithuanian-U.S. cooperation in the area of defence acquisitions.
