On February 11 the Ministry of National Defence and the Lithuanian Armed Forces took decisions on speeding up pivotal Lithuanian Armed Forces modernization projects. The projects concern priority acquisitions of weaponry and military equipment that enable destruction of high-value targets, surveillance and reconnaissance, and transportation.
“The decisions taken are necessary and timely in order to adequately respond to the geopolitical security situation in the region. We have identified a set of key projects which will significantly strengthen the combat power of the armed forces sooner as they are implemented in the nearest while, also, as well as boost the national defence industry as much as possible too,” says Minister of National Defence Arvydas Anušauskas.
Acquisitions aimed at strengthening indirect fire support capability and improving efficiency of close combat target destruction with combat drones will be also sped up, as well as acquisition of the necessary ammunition.
Increased defence spending has facilitated a breakthrough in the armed forces modernization efforts, however, the requirement for modern weaponry, equipment, gear and reserves remains high in view of the geopolitical situation and grown organization structure of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.
