“Our unity and support to Ukraine remain vital. We have to back Ukraine in every way possible – by political, economic, military means,” said Vice Minister of National Defence Margiris Abukevičius at a virtual Nordic-Baltic (NB8) Defence Ministers meeting Friday. A significant part of the session was dedicated to the security situation concerning Ukraine.
“We have to be ready in advance for a potential escalation,” M. Abukevičius. According to him, the NB8 Defence Minister share the view that the Russian intentions regarding the region remain offensive, and the military buildup near the border of Ukraine is one more proof.
“The public statements that Russia is making speak of its upgraded appetites, and the conditions and demands it introduces aims for the entire NATO Alliance. It is completely unacceptable. Any dialogue that takes place with Russia has to take place only according to conditions set by the West,” says Vice Minister.
Other topics addressed at the NB8 Defence Ministerial were the hybrid aggression from Belarus and the measures to counter it, as well as further NB8 cooperation plans.
The Nordic-Baltic (NB8) cooperation ins an informal format that units Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden.
