On December 9 Minister of National Defence Arvydas Anušauskas met with Chairman of the European Union Military Committee General Robert Brieger on a formal visit in Lithuania to discuss the security situation and measures of deterrence in the region, as well as further assistance from EU member states to Ukraine.
“We have to continue providing every kind of support to Ukraine because its victory is paramount for the future of the entire region. We should not delude ourselves into underestimation of the Russian threat. The commitments of the EU and Allies to Ukraine must be running a marathon: it is a long-term task, we cannot afford to get tired or relax for a while. It must be the basis for cooperation with NATO, especially the U.S. and the UK,” said A. Anušauskas.
Minister underscored that the Russian military activity in Kaliningrad was aggravating further the security situation in the Baltic Sea Region, and the hybrid and military threats from the Belarusian side did not go anywhere either. A. Anušauskas also pointed out to General the importance of the Eastern Partnership.
Other topics addressed at the meeting with Gen R. Brieger were the EU military missions and operations: Minister A. Anušauskas underscored that Lithuania intended to retain the current level of contribution.
