On May 17–24 the NATO Baltic Air Policing Detachment was alerted to patrol the airspace over the border of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Poland with the Russian Federation eleven times, and in response to international flight regulation violations – once.
On May 19 NATO fighter aircraft safeguarding the Baltic skies were dispatched to patrol the airspace over the eastern border of Latvia. The crews were tasked to identify a potential drone target in the southeast of Estonia. The target was identified and neutralised.

Their onboard transponders were switched off, no flight plans had been pre-filed and comminution with the regional air traffic control centre was not maintained.
