On July 28 representatives of German corporations Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann GmbH & Co KG presented to Lithuanian companies opportunities of becoming included in the supply chains related to Boxer IFV and component production at BOXER Industry Day LTU 2022 in Vilnius. Representatives also had discussions on a more extensive cooperation with the German manufacturers in providing services a production to other KMW and Rheinmetall platforms and systems.
“This Industry Day is well-timed as Lithuania announces plans to order more than 100 additional BOXER multi-purpose wheeled armored vehicles, thus giving Lithuanian industry a great opportunity to learn from horse’s mouth the expectation German companies have for the potential Lithuanian manufacturers and suppliers and learn more about the selection procedures,” said Vice Minister of National Defence Vilius Semeška in his welcome address.
V. Semeška underscored that the inclusion of Lithuanian companies in supply and manufacturing chains would facilitate maintenance of the acquired vehicles throughout their service life, develop local competencies and create high qualification jobs. It would be a significant boost to the development and strength of the Lithuanian defence industry.
The event was attended by Lithuania n companies selected by the German corporations on the basis of their criteria.
Component production in Lithuania and the contacts established with the Lithuanian companies are critical steps for a closer cooperation in the future expected to develop with major weaponry manufacturers, as well as in terms of inclusion in NATO and EU supply chains.
Earlier this year, in late June, German enterprises Rheinmetall and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann established Lithuania Defense Services (LDS) in Jonava. The company provides logistical and technical services to Lithuanian Armed Forces and NATO Allies’ military vehicles.
