“We cannot allow Russia to draw the red lines against the backdrop of its current actions destabilizing the security situation in Europe. Russia has many times cut through the red lines of the West before. It is time to discuss a mutual and solid response to the Russian military buildup near Ukraine’s border. Diplomatic measures alone will not be enough to deter Russia,” said Minister of National Defence Arvydas Anušauskas who met with U.S. Deputy National Security Advisor Jonathan Finer Wednesday.
He stressed that Ukraine had to be supported by all possible means, including lethal weapons.
“Lithuania will increase its assistance in Ukraine and we are ready to act together with the United States,” said A. Anušauskas.
After discussing the security challenges presented by Russia and the means to counter them, Minister also thanked J.Finer for the U.S. support against the pressure China exerted on Lithuania: “We are grateful for the U.S. support in response to the economic pressure and cyber threats from China. We aim to prevent acquisition of untrusted manufacturer technologies from China and to repopulate the freed up market through a closer cooperation with the U.S.”
A. Anušauskas also met with members of the Congress Adam Smith, Dianne Feinstein and Jim Inhofe who serve in the Armed Services, Intelligence and Appropriations Committees. They discussed U.S. military presence in Lithuania and Minister underscored such presence was the key deterrence against Russia. A. Anušauskas reiterated Lithuania aimed to offer a durable home for a permanent presence of the U.S. forces.
The United States is Lithuania’s strategic partner and one of the key allies for the security in the Baltic region. It contributes actively to the implementation of the assurance measures in the Baltic states and security and stability of the region. The U.S. actively supports our regional security with manpower, equipment and funds.
