Minister of National Defence Dovilė Šakalienė and Minister of Defence of Germany Boris Pistorius who is on a visit in Lithuania have unveiled a Permanent Logistical Support Area (PLSA) developed for NATO forces Germany has put in over EUR 90 million in developing the advanced infrastructure which marks a new stage in the two countries’ strategic partnership.
The unveiled PLSA includes a maintenance and servicing facility, warehouses, carwash, gas station and all the other equipment required for technical readiness. The site will support 24/7 readiness of the NATO forces deployed in Lithuania.
“Lithuania and Germany are progressing from practical cooperation towards a deeper defence integration. That means that the organisations structures, capabilities and strategies of our Armed Forces grow closer together.
“Preparations to station the German Brigade in full volume in Lithuania as a Host Nation are going like clockwork. The development of the Rūdninkai Military Campus is progressing faster than expected –we will have all key infrastructure by 2027,” said Minister of National Defence.
The Defence Ministers have bilaterally discussed other important topics as well, including strengthening air defence in the Baltic region, consistent support to Ukraine and maintaining the U.S. forces in Europe. D. Šakalienė underscored that russia’s provocations in NATO airspace clearly demonstrated the need to transition the air policing mission to a full-fledged air defence.
Germany is also contributing to the Lithuanian and Icelandic co-led Capability Coalition for Demining of Ukraine with the current amount of support standing at EUR 278 million.
