Vice Minister of National Defence Vitalija Zumerienė and representatives of the U.S. defence contractor Lockheed Martin signed a cooperation agreement to expand the defence industrial cooperation on the ground in Lithuania. Joint Lithuanian and Lockheed Martin projects are aimed to encompass a range of areas: from missile technology to maintenance, servicing, training and integration solutions.
The agreement is designed to incorporate Lithuanian companies in the international supply chains, as well as to strengthen the technical base, create local expertise, identify mutually beneficial areas, and to involve the Lithuanian industry and scientific institutions in joint projects.
“The agreement we have signed with Lockheed Martin and establishment of their division in Lithuania are not just symbolic steps, it is a real opportunity for the U.S. defence giant to develop closer collaboration with Lithuanian institutions, business and the scientific community. We have also initiated this cooperation agreement as a reflection of Lithuania’s openness and resolve to offer favourable conditions for defence industry growth. We aim to attract new investment and work on Lithuania’s ability not just to purchase weapons but also to been a participant in the defence technology ecosystem,” said Vice Minister V. Zumerienė during the visit to the United States.
Lithuania already owns advanced Lockheed Martin systems, including HIMARS, thus strengthening national Armed Forces capacity, increasing deterrence an ensuring better interoperability with the Allies.
“Our partnership with Lithuania marks a new stage of cooperation which transcends supply of world-class weaponry systems. Looking for joint industry opportunities, we expand the network of Lockheed Martin suppliers and partners worldwide. This is exactly the approach we need to be on schedule with the ever-growing demand for our battletested solutions inside and outside the country,” said Vice President and General Manager at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control Gaylia Campbell.
The agreement is a well-weighed step towards a stronger, more modern and integrated Lithuanian defence industry. The success of further cooperation would significantly increase Lithuania’s security and contribute to strengthening security in the region.
