On April 14-20 NATO Air Policing Detachment in the Baltic states was alerted to intercept aircraft of the Russian Federation violating international aviation regulations in international airspace over the Baltic Sea twice.
On April 14 NATO fighter aircraft guarding the Baltic skies were scrambled to intercept one IL-20 flying through international airspace from the mainland Russia to Kaliningrad. It had the onboard transponder switched on, no flight plan, but maintained radio communication with the regional air traffic control centre.
On April 18 NATO fighter jets were scrambled to intercept two SU-24s flying from the mainland Russia to Kaliningrad via international airspace. They had their onboard transponders switched off, without the flight plans, but the crews were maintaining radio communication with the regional air traffic control centre.
