“Allies have displayed the commitment to our security and agreed to fundamentally enhance security in the eastern part of the Alliance , including by deployment of forward brigades,” Minister of National Defence Arvydas Anušauskas who is taking part in the NATO Summit in Madrid in the delegation of President of the Republic of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda on June 29-30.
NATO Heads of State and Government agreed that Russia was a direct threat to the security of the Alliance. Allied leaders endorsed the new Strategic Concept which lays out the concept of forward defence. It was agreed at the Summit to build up the defenses of the eastern flank of NATO with forward brigades while reflecting specific regional conditions.
NATO leaders also have blueprinted other measures to strengthen the security, such as prepositioning of equipment and ammunition, enhanced quick reinforcement conditions, fortifications of air and maritime domains. According to A. Anušauskas, the decisions taken at the Summit will significantly enhance defence of the Baltic states.
A. Anušauskas will also take part in the informal NATO Defence Ministers dinner and have bilateral meetings with other Allies in Madrid.
Lithuania has supported Finland’s and Sweden’s application for NATO membership at the Madrid Summit. The formal decision has been taken to formally invite the two countries to join NATO. Their member will significantly improve the security of the Baltic region.
