The U.S. Department of State has approved the sale of AIM-9X Block II Sidewinder missiles to Lithuania. The U.S.-proposed contract on the missiles compatible with the NASAMS air defence system may stand at EUR 214 million (EUR 183 million).
“The strategic partnership with the United States remains one of the central factors of Lithuania’s security. The Sidewinder missiles will fir in the comprehensive air defence architecture and strengthen the capability of Lithuania and the entire NATO to counter air threats in the future. This one again testifies to the steadfast American commitment to European security,” says Minister of National Defence Robertas Kaunas.
The contract covers also Sidewinder training missiles with engineering, technical and logistical support, as well as the other related program elements. The purchase complements the previous one which was worth USD 19.5 million.
“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a NATO Ally that is an important force for ensuring peace and stability in Europe,” reads the press release of the U.S Department of State.
The missiles manufactured by the principal contractor in the U.S. RTX Corporation can be used against enemy missiles and drones, also, against helicopters and even aircraft.
