Vice Minister of National Defence Karolis Aleksa received retired United States Army Lieutenant General Herbert Raymond McMaster who served as the 26th United States National Security Advisor to President Donald Trump, former Commanding General United States Army Europe Ben Hodges and retired colonel of the Israeli Defence Forces Daniel Rakov.
At the meeting, security situation in Europe was discussed, views exchanged on the launched U.S. preparations for negotiations and peace in Russia’s war against Ukraine, as well as development and strengthening of the European defence capabilities.
“The security situation in Europe is deteriorating, Russia does not walk away from its aggressive ambition – the United States force presence in Europe is the foundation of deterrence,” said Vice Minister K. Aleksa.
Vice Minister reiterated Lithuania position against negotiations on truce and peace without Ukraine at the table, or Europe. K. Alekna asserted of Lithuania’s effort to take every step needed to strengthen its defence capabilities.
Retired General B. Hodges underscored that Lithuania was an exemplary NATO Ally and should let the U.S. see it. According to him, defence spending needs to be increased by other European Allies too.
Retired General H. Raymond McMaster stressed the necessity to maintain conversation with U.S. President D.Trump to make sure Europe’s position is heard. The advice was addressed to Allies taking their defence investment seriously. According to retired Colonel D. Rakov, the developments in the European security framework should be seen not as a wake-up call but a call to action.
