“NATO needs reliable defence plans and forces that are ready and capable of responding in a timely manner. Allied forces must be ready to respond swiftly,” said Minster of National Defence Arvydas Anušauskas discussing with NATO counterparts Alliance deterrence and defence policy planning in response to threat from Russia.
According to Minister A. Anušauskas, the present geopolitical context – increased Russia’s capabilities and control of Belarus – necessitates a NATO defence planning update.
It was agreed in a discussion on the increasing Russian capabilities that the transatlantic unity, defence planning and capability development was of utmost importance to NATO member states. It was agreed to plan out deterrence in the Euro-Atlantic space, such plans will ensure that the forces are deployed in the right place and at the right time.
NATO Defence Ministers took into account Russia’s further missile system development. Therefore, NATO continues the adaptation and the assessment on the possibilities to further enhance Alliance deterrence and defence in the most efficient way.
Russia suspended the NATO Military Liaison Mission Moscow earlier this week. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg acknowledged that the relations between NATO and Russia were at the lowest point since the Cold War.
