Minister of National Defence Dovilė Šakalienė signed a Letter of Intent on acquisition of CV90 infantry fighting vehicles. Lithuania is part of the procurement programme alongside Finland, Sweden, Norway, Estonia and the Netherlands.
“This agreement is a proof of our commitment to strengthen Lithuanian Armed Forces capabilities and our close cooperation with the Nordic partners. We need the acquisition programme to be speedy and effective and concluding in a timely delivery Lithuania aims for a Full Operational Capability of our Division by 2030, the CV90 are an inseparable component of it. A joint acquisition programme is a strategic solution not only leading to a more efficient weaponry provision but also underlining a close cooperation between the countries,” says Minister of National Defence.
The signature of the Letter of Intent is yet another proof of a strong Nordic-Baltic cooperation in NATO format. It is also an effort to strengthen national and multinational defensive capabilities and to coordinate advanced military equipment procurement in an effective manner. Moreover, it contributes to developing a lasting and sustainable industrial cooperation as Lithuania is included into the programme’s supply chains and effective maintenance and sustainment of the CV90 in Lithuania is ensured.
The upcoming acquisition of the CV90 infantry fighting vehicles will also enable to use resources more efficiently and increase operational compatibility among the Allies, as well as strengthen a closer military and industrial cooperation.
The CV90 platform manufactured by Sweden’s BAE Systems Hägglunds is distinguished by its stop level protection, mobility and warfighting ability. It is successfully utilised across NATO Allies and has been battletested. The CV90 infantry fighting vehicles are expected to be delivered to members of the programme, including Lithuania, by 2028.
