A staff exercise on May 5 in Copenhagen focussed on situational awareness in the Baltic Sea. The event was co-organized by the Danish Ministry of Defence and the U.S. Department of Defense and also attended by representatives of Lithuania, Latvia Estonia, Finland, Sweden and Norway. The major exercise objective was to carry out analysis of the opportunities for cooperation on airspace and maritime surveillance.
“Development of airspace and maritime situation awareness capabilities is a national priority that we invest in. A strong Nordic, Baltic and U.S. cooperation in this format is important and we have to continue it. We are grateful to our Baltic Sea region neighbors for sharing surveillance data on both, airspace and maritime domain, which is critical for the security of the entire region,” Defence Policy Director of the Ministry of National Defence Vaidotas Urbelis said at the exercise.
The event looked into a range of different situations that required regional neighbors to find best solutions for coordination of joint activity and exchange situational awareness data to ensure the security of the region as a whole.
