On February 29 the Force protection Unit (FPU) formed by King Mindaugas Hussar Battalion, Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf, was welcomed home after six months in the NATO Mission Iraq (NMI) at a ceremony in Panevėžys.
“We are fighting for our country not just in our country. Upholding international commitments is an organic part of collective defence. Contributions to NATO missions outside the Alliance allow us to expect the same Allied support in return. Let me also thank you your families for their understanding, patience and caring. When a solider is on duty far from home, family support is very necessary,” said General V. Rupšys welcoming the contingent.
In composition of the Danish Mobile Force Protection Company, the Lithuanians were completing a non-combat operation for strengthening the Iraqi military and security institutions, enable them to fight terrorism, prevent the Islamic State from acting in Iraq and stabilize the country. The task of the Lithuanian FPU was to ensure security of NATO personnel against sporadic attacks of IS groups while they were training the Iraqi troops. The contingent was decorated for excellent service, dedication and personal contribution on multinational deployments.
“Lithuania contribution in Iraq is fighting terrorism. We have a commitment to help the Iraqi forces become stronger to prevent the return of the Islamic State. We enroll in multinational missions to advance security and stability in the region,” said Minister of National Defence Arvydas Anušauskas.
The contingent of 29, the 7th rotation of the FPU, underwent pre-deployment training starting March 2023 in Lithuania followed by six weeks and certification in the Kingdom of Denmark alongside Danish colleagues.
Lithuania first contributed to NMI in early 2019. The unit served as part of the international battalion in Baghdad alongside Danish, Dutch and Polish troops. Since Denmark has terminated its participation in the mission, Lithuania has no further rotations scheduled either. Photo credits: King Mindaugas Hussar Battalion
