“A unified and strong diplomatic response of the European Union to the intense pro-Russian hacker attacks against Lithuania and other Member States is an important signal that such a malicious activity is unacceptable and will bring consequences to the responsible,” underscored Vice Minister of National Defence Margiris Abukevičius speaking about the Declaration by the High Representative on behalf of the European Union on malicious cyber activities conducted by hackers and hacker groups in the context of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine released earlier today.
The Declaration underscores on behalf of the High Representative Josep Borell and all EU Member States that the Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks carried out against several EU Member States and Partners claimed by pro-Russian hacker groups was yet another signal of rising cyber threat tensions.
“Clearly, the DDoS targeting Lithuania and other EU Member States are an integral part of the Russian war in Ukraine,” said M. Abukevičius.
According to Vice Minister, the Lithuanian cyber security and law enforcement institutions collaborate with international partners and a pre-trial procedure has been launched to assess the criminal offence and bring to justice the participants, not ruling out application of collective diplomatic EU measures further in the course.
The EU and Member States have strongly condemned cyber-attacks against Ukraine in the context of the Russian war against Ukraine and attributed responsibility for cyber activities targeting the satellite KA-SAT network to the Russian Federation earlier this year as well.
