On October 23–29 NATO Air Policing Mission Detachment fighter aircraft were scrambled five times to intercept aircraft of the Russian Federation violating flight rules in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.
On October 23 the NATO Air Policing Detachment aircraft were scrambled to intercept one IL-20 flying from the mainland of the Russian Federation to Kaliningrad through international airspace. It had no pre-filed flight plan, though maintained radio communication with the regional air traffic control centre and the onboard transponder was kept on.
On October 23 NATO fight jets intercepted one IL-78 flying from Kaliningrad to mainland Russia via international airspace. It had no pre-filed flight plan but the crew was maintaining radio communication with the regional air traffic centre and kept the onboard transponder switched on.
On October 24 NATO Air Policing fighter aircraft were scrambled to intercept one IL-20 and two SU-27s which flew out of Kaliningrad into international airspace and then back. The IL-20 had no pre-filed flight plan and was not maintaining radio communication with the regional air traffic control centre, though the onboard transponder was switched on. Neither of the two SU-27 had flight plans, kept the radio communication or had the onboard transponders on.
On October 25 NATO Air Policing aircraft intercepted one IL-18 flying through international airspace from mainland Russia to Kaliningrad. The flight was conducted according to a pre-filed plan, the crew kept the onboard transponder on and maintained radio communication with the regional air traffic control centre.
On October 27 NATO fighter aircraft intercepted two aircraft: an IL-20 and an AN-72. The IL-20 was flying from Kaliningrad to mainland Russia through international airspace, without the flight plan, onboard transponder switched off, not maintaining radio communication with the regional air traffic control centre. The AN-72 was on its way from the mainland Russia to Kaliningrad without a pre-filed flight plan, with its onboard transponder switched on and maintaining radio communication with the regional air traffic control centre.
