On February 9 NATO fighter aircraft safeguarding the Baltic airspace were scrambled in response to one IL-20 flying through international airspace from mainland Russia to Kaliningrad. Its onboard transponder was switched off, the crew had no pre-filed flight plan but were maintaining radio communication with the regional air traffic control centre.
On February 13 the NATO Air Policing Detachment responded to one Su-24MR and one Su-33 flying from mainland Russia and back via international airspace. Their onboard transponders were switched off, the crews were maintaining radio communication but had no pre-filed flight plans.
