On February 7 Minister of National Defence held the traditional meeting with foreign Defence Attachés accredited to Lithuania. The participants were briefed on the Lithuanian defence policy priorities for 2023 and beyond. The importance of modernization and enhancement of the Lithuanian Armed Forces was highlighted, as well as increasing the resilience of public institutions and readiness to respond to security threats, improvement of Lithuanian Armed Forces infrastructure, continued assistance to Ukraine.
One of the main objectives of defence policy presented at the meeting was the sought break-through in implementation of the Forward Defence decisions, air defence, military equipment and ammunition pre-positioning in the eastern part of the Alliance. Lithuania also aims to ensure all NATO Allies sign an updated document in Vilnius regarding the commitment to consistently increase defence spending.
“These Madrid decisions are important for the security of the entire Alliance, particularly the Baltic states and Eastern European Allies, therefore it is the main objective of Lithuania for the NATO Summit in Vilnius. We are also working to ensure another step in implementation of Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations. We will negotiate with Allies to find a realistic solution for security guarantees for Ukraine, one way or another, we have to present a membership perspective to Ukraine in Vilnius,” underscored A. Anušauskas.
The meeting was attended by Defence Attaché or their deputies representing Czechia Republic, Denmark, Japan, UK, Canada, Poland, Netherlands, Norway, Georgia, Sweden, Germany, Ukraine, Türkiye, and by digital means from Warsaw – Bulgaria, Italy, Croatia and Slovenia.
