“Norway is our important defence partner and we cooperate in various formats, both bilaterally and multilaterally. The security of the Northern and Baltic Sea regions is intertwined, therefore it is in our interests to strengthen our further cooperation as a necessary condition for the security of the region,“ said Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis during the meeting with Minister of Defence of the Kingdom of Norway Frank Bakke-Jensen on 8 September.
R. Karoblis thanked Minister F. Bakke-Jensen for the contribution of Norway to the enhancement of Lithuania’s security: “Your contribution in the form of assigning troops to the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group helps to ensure the stability of its combat readiness“.
Norwegian Defence Minister F. Bakke-Jensen visited Lithuania in the composition of the delegation of Prime Minister Erna Solberg.
The Cooperation between Lithuania and Norway in the field of defence involves various areas – defence policy planning, training. Meetings of ministers, chiefs of defence, political directors, etc. are organised in multilateral formats: Nordic-Baltic, Northern Group, United Kingdom-led Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), that are contributing to the strengthening of security co-operation. Norway also participates in the NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission and deployed three rotations of troops and fighter jets to Šiauliai in 2005, 2007 and 2015.
In June 2020, National Advanced Surface to Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) acquired from Norway were delivered to the Air Defence Battalion of the Lithuanian Air Force. This modern air defence equipment is able to destroy enemy aircraft within a few tens of kilometres. Norway has also handed over to Lithuania short-range air defence systems RBS-70, which are currently used by the Air Defence Battalion of the Air Force. The Lithuanian Armed Forces has acquired from Norway ships for the Navy as well as implemented other projects.
