On August 4–10 the NATO Air Policing Detachment was alerted to intercept aircraft of the Russian Federation flying in violation of international flight rules twice and to patrol over the Baltic border area once.
On August 8 NATO fighter aircraft safeguarding the Baltic skies identified and escorted one TU-154 flying through international from mainland Russia to Kaliningrad. Its onboard transponder was switched on, the crew was maintaining radio communication with the regional air traffic control centre but had no pre-filed flight plan. Two SU-30s escorting it were flying through international airspace from mainland Russia and back. Their onboard transponders were switched off, the crews were not maintaining radio communication and had no pre-filed flight plans. The TU-154 was met by other two SU-27 which took off from Kaliningrad, the aircraft had no flight plans, their onboard transponders were off and the crews were not maintaining radio communication.
