The United States Congress approved a supplemental funding package, which brings the total Foreign Military Financing (FMF) provided to Lithuania to $141 million in fiscal year 2022. The assistance is part of a commitment of $2.2 billion total to support Ukraine and 17 countries that have provided significant assistance to Ukraine.
This funding is intended to be used to build the capacity of Lithuania’s military to deter and defend against the increased threat from Russia. Additionally, these funds will help backfill military capabilities Lithuania has generously provided to Ukraine.
“Lithuania’s leadership in the region and military support for the defense of Ukraine has been crucial to the efforts of the Ukrainian people to fight back against Russian aggression. This money will help Lithuania to rebuild important defense capabilities for its own protection that will also strengthen NATO’s eastern flank.” – U.S. Ambassador Robert Gilchrist.
“We are very grateful to the United States, which is providing aid to the struggling Ukraine, and provides financial support to the Baltic countries, which is extremely important at this critical moment. This shows that the U.S. commitment to the security of our region remains strong and is growing,” says Minister of National Defense Arvydas Anušauskas.
Foreign Military Financing is a program that provides a grant or direct loan funding to foreign militaries for the purchase of U.S. defense equipment, training, and services.
