The Seimas has approved the proposition to develop legal basis for Lithuania’s contribution to the international maritime security and freedom of navigation efforts in the Strait of Hormuz. The decision allows for a contingent of up to 40 military and civilian personnel of the National Defence System. The proposed legal framework authorises contribution to international efforts for ensuring safety of navigation in one of the most vital shipping routes in the world.
“Lithuania supports allied efforts where the future of a greater international security element is in question. The shipping routes disrupted in the Strait of Hormuz have a direct effect on Lithuania: primarily, in increased fuel prices. Thus securing freedom and security of navigation is a concern of all of us. To mandate contribution to the operation means to demonstrate a clear commitment to support the Allies and strengthening of the practical military cooperation with the U.S.,” says Minister of National Defence Robertas Kaunas.
The Strait of Hormuz has strategic significance for international trade and energy security. When navigation in the region is disrupted, global implications hit, including supply chains of energy resources and oil prices. Lithuania’s contribution to Allied-coordinated efforts will strengthen the joint response to threats for safety of navigation.
The mandate allows Lithuania to join the operational planning at early stages. The capabilities predicted to be needed in the multinationals operations include demining, force protection, reconnaissance and defence. Lithuania’s contribution would be coordinated with the Allied planning and actual operational needs. Depending on the situation and operation concepts, actions may take place not just in the Strait of Hormuz but also the waters of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
Lithuanian military participation is assessed to contribute in strengthening the international maritime security, interoperability with the Allies, and practical readiness of the Lithuanian Armed Forces to operate in multinational environments. Moreover, such engagement aligns with Lithuania’s priorities for military cooperation and guidelines of the Government’s programme regarding participation of the Lithuanian Armed Forces in multinational missions and operations led by NATO, European Union, United Nations, United States of America and other strategic Allies.
