On May 25–31 the NATO Baltic Air Policing Detachment was alerted in response to international flight regulation violations two times.
On May 27 NATO air policing fighter jets intercepted one IL-18 which breeched into Finland’s airspace briefly (for approx. 2 minutes) potentially as a result of poor weather conditions. It had the onboard transponder on, a pre-filed flight plan and was maintaining radio communication with the Regional Air Traffic Control Centre.
On May 29 NATO fighter jets were alerted to intercept two SU-30 flying from Kaliningrad and back via international airspace. The two aircraft had no flight plans, their onboard transponders were switched off and the crews were not maintaining radio communication.
