Address by Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas at the discussions hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), U.S.A.: The Future of Baltic Security
2013.10.30

Baltic security: Lithuanian view

In Lithuania there is a long lived story about the advertisement in a newspaper saying "Proposal for exchange: I'm trading my independence for a secure geographical location".

And it is not only a joke. During interwar period one of the most prominent political philosopher Pakštas has proposed very seriously to the Government to consider buying an island close to the Africa's shores. He was sure Lithuanians would never be secure and finally will face the extinction.

Welcoming and keynote address by Minister of National Defence J. Olekas delivered at the fall session of the NATO Science and Technology Board
2013.09.18

It is my great honour to welcome you today here in Vilnius and address this highly distinguished NATO community.

Your meeting is taking place in very important and busy time for my country. Lithuania is chairing the EU Council, which gives us good opportunity to put forwards initiatives critical both for NATO and EU. I would like to mention just several examples – energy security, cooperation with Eastern partners, enhancing NATO-EU relations. Both EU and NATO are working together in many areas and it is in our interest to make this cooperation even stronger.

Welcoming Remarks by Juozas Olekas, Minister of National Defence of Lithuania at the Seminar “The Future of Belarus: Challenges and Opportunities for Europe”
2013.09.18

My very warm welcome to all of you. It is my pleasure and honour to address you today on this very topic. The Belarus issue is very close to us for two obvious reasons. First, it is our close neighbor – just some 40 km away from Vilnius. Second reason is related to a key priority of our chairmanship of the EU Council – Eastern Partnership, where Belarus is part of it, being one of the six countries participating in the Eastern Partnership Initiative

It is my great pleasure for me to welcome you all in our capital Vilnius. I am very glad that so many of you are taking part in our Seminar, representing a number of EU and NATO Member States and institutions, willing to share your ideas on a topic which is of great importance for Europe today: it is energy security. I am also delighted to see participants, who represent other sectors than defence. And that is a reality – challenges in the energy security area require the comprehensive response.

2013.09.05

Dear Colleagues, Dear Guests,

It is my great honour to host the Informal meeting of Defence Ministers in Vilnius. Vilnius is the cultural and political heart of Lithuania and a place of historic importance to the whole of Europe. Lithuania’s fight for independence from the foreign rule of totalitarianism was uniquely marked by peaceful resistance, outstanding solidarity and powerful inspiration and Vilnius was one of the places where the wider liberation movement in 1988 started.
