Nordic and Baltic countries announced the Nordic-Baltic Assistance Programme 2016.09.30
![]() On September 29 Defence Policy and Armament Directors of the Nordic and the Baltic countries signed a declaration on extending the Nordic-Baltic Assistance Programme at a joint meeting in Reykjavik, Iceland.
“Countries in our region will unite forces to render assistance to such countries as Georgia or Ukraine. I hope that geography of joint assistance projects will span more in the future,” Defence Policy Director of the Ministry of National Defence Vaidotas Urbelis said. The declaration lays out key forms and directions of assistance with a particular focus on security sector reform, fight against corruption, and democratic control of armed forces. |

Slovakia joined Eastern Partnership Trust Fund 2016.09.29
![]() During informal European Union Defence Ministers meeting on September 26 in Bratislava Slovakia signed an act of joining the Eastern Partnership Trust Fund which assists Eastern Partnership countries in joining the EU Common Security and Defence Policy activities.
The document was signed by Defence Minister of Slovakia Peter Gajdoš, and representatives of the establishing countries – Minister of Defence of Latvia Raimonds Bergmanis, Secretary of State for Defence of the United Kingdom Michael Fallon, Ambassador of Hungary HE Harry Alex Rusz, and Head of the MoD Euro-Atlantic Cooperation Department Saulius Gasiūnas on behalf of the Minister of National Defence. |

“National cyber security exercise Cyber Shield 2016 crowns an important stage of the state’s cyber security development,” Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas said at the closing of the first exercise of its type in Lithuania. Over 100 representatives of more than 40 Lithuanian state, cyber incident management and investigation, information resources management, scientific, energy, communications operators, and other agencies, practiced responding to cyber incidents during the exercise from September 27 to 29 in Kaunas, Klaipėda, and Vilnius. |

Representatives in leading positions of Lithuanian state, cyber incident management and investigation, information resources management, scientific, energy, communications operators, and other agencies, practice responding to cyber incidents during the part of the exercise concerning procedures on the first day.

Data on interceptions of aircraft completed near the Baltic States’ borders on September 19-25, 2016 2016.09.26
![]() On September NATO fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled 7 times to intercept military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.
On September 19 the NATO fighters intercepted an IL-18 and one AN-12 aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea. The aircraft were flying from mainland Russia towards Kaliningrad without using onboard transponders, though according to pre-filed flight plans and maintained communication with air traffic control centres. |

Soldiers with Kęstutis Battalion deployed to train Ukrainian forces 2016.09.21
![]() On September 21 a team of military instructors formed mainly by military personnel assigned to the Lithuanian Grand Duke Kęstutis Mechanised Infantry Battalion, Motorised Infantry Brigade Žemaitija, was formally deployed to Ukraine. The troops will continue Lithuania’s participation in the United States-led Joint Multinational Training Group – Ukraine. |
