First shots to be fired from self-propelled PzH 2000 howitzers in Lithuania at Exercise Flaming Thunder 2016

On August 2 the Lithuanian Armed Forces will fire the first shots from the self-propelled PzH 2000 howitzers at home, in the Brigadier General Povilas Plechavičius Training Area (Klaipėda distr.). Over a thousand of participants will carry out indirect fire tasks at Exercise Flaming thunder 2016 from 1 to 12 August I three locations: BG Silvestras Žukauskas Training Area in Pabradė, BG Povilas Plechavičius Training Area in Kairiai, and in the Gaižiūnai Training Area.

On July 28 Lieutenant Colonel Tapani Aslak Mattus, outgoing Defence Attaché of Sweden in Lithuania, was farewelled and his successor, Lieutenant Colonel Örjan Ström was welcomed at a ceremony in the Ministry of National Defence.

 

Based in Vilnius, Lieutenant Colonel Tapani Aslak Mattus was accredited in July 2012. Vice Minister Antanas Valys presented to the outgoing official the National Defence System Medal of Merit as a sign of respectful farewell and for his personal contribution to the enhancement of Lithuanian-Swedish defence cooperation.

On August 1-5 international sea survival Exercise Baltic Bikini 2016 in the territorial waters of Lithuania in the Baltic Sea will be attended by nearly 100 Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian military airmen, Lithuanian Air Force AS365N3+ Dauphin and Mi-8T helicopters, and LNS Žemaitis (P11), a patrol ship of the Lithuanian Navy.

On July 25 an updated Protocol of Amendment to the agreement of military cooperation between the Ministry of Defence of Kazakhstan and the Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania of 2008 was signed in Astana, Kazakhstan. The document stipulates cooperation between the two countries in defence policy, personnel training, logistics, regional security, and other areas of interest for both parties.

In the period from July 18 to 24 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the Air Policing Mission over the Baltics were scrambled once to intercept military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

“In the context of the present security situation and challenges, the European Union and NATO need a deeper cooperation to be able to provide security in Europe and beyond. Both NATO and the EU possess versatile instruments which would undoubtedly complement efforts of both organisations to respond to emerging threats,” Rima Malakauskienė, Deputy Head of the Department for Euro-Atlantic Cooperation of the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence, said at the EU Defence Policy Directors meeting in Bratislava, Slovakia, on July 22.

Lithuanian military personnel will take part in U.S.-led operation as of next year

Lithuania plans deploying its first team of six military instructors to U.S.-led Operation Inherent Resolve as of the beginning of next year to contribute to U.S. efforts of fighting the Islamic State (ISIL) in Iraq. Lithuanians will be part of the operation in composition of a Danish contingent and assist in training Iraqi forces to fight ISIL.

In the second semester of 2016 LNS Skalvis (M53), a mine countermeasures ship of the Lithuanian Navy, is assigned to the NATO Response Force (NRF). This weekend the vessel arrived in Kiel (Germany) and joined the Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group One (SNMCMG1). The Lithuanian ship will take part in SNMCMG1 activities and exercises in the Baltic and the North Seas until December.

On July 19 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas departs for Washington (USA) to attend a meeting of the Global Coalition to Counter-ISIL in Foreign and Defence Ministers format on July 20-21.

 

The Ministers of the US-led coalition will address progress made in the military campaign of countering ISIL, further operations, and political efforts to tackle the conflict.
