Experts from Lithuanian and Norwegian Ministries of Defence discussed acquisition of NASAMS mid-range air defence system

Last week work group of the Ministry of National Defence discussed details of technical agreement on acquisition of NASAMS (Norwegian Advanced Surface to Air Missile System). The agreement outlines the conditions of procurement and the components of the air defence system Lithuania could procure.

USS Mount Whitney of the United States Navy on port visit in Klaipėda

On June 30-July 1 USS Mount Whitney of the United States Navy is conducting a friendly visit in Klaipėda Seaport. During the visit, the USS Mount Whitney commanding officer and a delegation will meet with the Commander of the Lithuanian Navy, mayor of Klaipėda city, and attend other formal events.

Rotational troops from Portugal arrive for exercises and training in Lithuania

As the Assurance Measures agreed by NATO are implemented, a unit of rotational troops from Portugal will deploy in Lithuania for joint exercises and training on June 28 through 30. Roughly 120 soldiers will train alongside colleagues with the Lithuanian Land Force till mid-October.

 

The Portuguese military personnel arrive to Kaunas and Vilnius Airports in several groups on June 22-29, while roughly 40 vehicles (OBUS M119 artillery guns, military trucks and off-roads) they bring will arrive at Klaipėda Seaport on June 30.

On June 29 Seimas (Parliament) of the Republic of Lithuania approved limit number of troops Lithuania will assign to the United Kingdom-led Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) and the number of Lithuanian soldiers to be posted to NATO and EU operational headquarters in 2017-2018. The resolution adopted by the Parliament also provides legal basis for the deployment to multinational operations as regards the Lithuanian military personnel to be assigned to the JEF and the said operational headquarters.

On June 29 Seimas adopted an amendment to the resolution regarding deployment of Lithuanian military units to international operations: namely, to additionally deploy up to 30 military instructors to U.S.-led coalition operation Inherent Resolve, and up to 20 troops – to the EU Operation Sophia in the Southern Central Mediterranean.

 

The amendment provides legal basis for deployment of up to 30 Lithuanian military instructors to train and advise security forces of Iraq with the earliest deployment date to be no sooner than this July, and participation of Lithuanian military in the coalition operation is restricted to non-combat tasks.

On June 24 two 155 mm self-propelled PzH2000 (Panzerhaubitze 2000) howitzers the Lithuanian Armed Forces have acquired from the German Armed Forces were brought to General ROmualdas Giedraitis Artillery Battalion, Mechanised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf

 

These are the first of the 16 155mm self-propelled howitzers bought for combat purposes by the Lithuanian Armed Forces from the German Armed Forces under a contract signed last September, 5 more are acquired for training and spare parts.

On June 23 amendment to the resolution of the Seimas was submitted to the Seimas by the Ministry of National Defence regarding deployment of Lithuanian military units to international operations personnel: namely, to additionally deploy up to 30 military instructors to U.S.-led coalition operation Inherent Resolve, and up to 20 troops – to the EU Operation Sophia in the Southern Central Mediterranean.

Today, June 23, the first two of the 155 mm self-propelled PzH2000 (Panzerhaubitze 2000) howitzers the Lithuanian Armed Forces have acquired from the Bundeswehr will be brought to Lithuania. Under a contract signed last September the Lithuanian Armed Forces bought from the German Armed Forces 16 155mm self-propelled howitzers for combat purposes, and 5 for training and spare parts. By the said contract the Lithuanian Armed Forces also acquired 26 M577 V2 armoured command vehicles and 6 BPZ2 recovery tanks, 53 pieces of materiel in total. The contract also s includes training for the Lithuanian soldiers and support for technical maintenance arrangements.

On June 22 Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lieutenant General Jonas Vytautas Žukas and a delegation formed by representatives of the Ministry of National Defence and the Lithuanian Armed Forces observed tests of prototype Boxer infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) arranged by the ARTEC industrial group in Klietz training area, Germany.

 

“I appreciate the manufacturer’s effort to demonstrate a prototype in operation in accordance with Lithuania’s requirements ahead of signing an agreement,” the Chief of Defence of Lithuania said.
