Lithuanian soldiers decorated after deployment to the multinational operation off the coast of Somalia

On May 31 Vice Minister of National Defence Antanas Valys congratulated and presented decorations to soldiers who had finished 6-month service as the Autonomous Vessel Protection Detachment 3 (AVPD 3) in multinational European Union operation ATALANTA tackling piracy and at sea robbery off the Somali coast in the Indian Ocean.

 

“The service and professionalism you contribute to multinational operations allow Lithuania to be a respectable state and a responsible member of NATO and the European Union. For us, all the people of Lithuania, it means NATO support. Your efforts were preventing piracy, while efforts of our allies ensure completion of NATO Baltic air policing tasks, also, soldiers from different countries are rehearsing to counter possible aggression here,” Vice Minister A.Valys said.

From May 31 to June 1 teachers and students of the Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL) Higher Command Studies Course and the Joint Command and General Staff Course are conducting a visit in Lithuania. The guests have or will be meeting with leaderships of the National Defence System, NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence (ENSEC COE), and the NATO Force Integration Unit (NFIU), and representatives of the Parliament, Government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania during the visit.

From May 23 to 29 NATO fighter aircraft conducting air policing tasks in the Baltic States were scrambled twice to intercept military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace above the Baltic Sea.

 

On May 27 NATO aircraft identified and escorted an Il-38 of the Russian Federation flying in international airspace above the Baltic Sea from Kaliningrad towards mainland Russia. The crew was flying in accordance with a pre-filed flight plan and maintained radio communication with air traffic control centre, but onboard transponder of the aircraft was switched off.

On May 27 the Council on Defence Resources of the Ministry of National Defence agreed to begin negotiations with the Government of Norway on potential acquisition of the NASAMS medium-range air defence systems.

May 26, Klaipėda, Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas pointed out Belgium’s proactive contribution to our security at a meeting with Minister of Defence of the Kingdom of Belgium Steven Vandeput.

 

“Having sent the first fighter aircraft of the NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission 12 years ago, Belgium continues contributing to ensure our security through intense bilateral cooperation with Lithuanian land, naval and air forces,” Minister of National Defence J. Olekas said at a bilateral meeting with his Belgian counterpart aboard the LNS Jotvingis of the Lithuanian Navy.

During Operation Baltic Spirit 2016 which ran on May 16-25 roughly 50 nautical miles (or roughly 172 square kilometres) of Baltic seafloor were surveyed and 912 objects were identified. In total, 18 explosive objects were found on the seabed during the mine countermeasures (MCM) operation, 15 of the objects identified being naval mines and 3 of them – torpedoes. 17 of the 18 hazardous findings were destroyed on the spot using explosives of smaller demolition power.

On May 25 Minister of National Defence J.Olekas, Minister of Defence of Estonia Hannes Hanso and Minister of Defence of Latvia Raimonds Bergmanis met with their Georgian counterpart, Minister Tinatin Khidasheli in Tbilisi.

 

At the meeting Minister J.Olekas reiterated Lithuania’s commitment to support Georgia’s aspirations for NATO membership and to assist in the implementation of the Substantial NATO-Georgia Package.

On May 26 Minister of National Defence and Minister of Defence of the Kingdom of Belgium Steven Vandeput will attend DV Day events of multinational mine countermeasures (MCM) operation Open Spirit 2016 and observe participating ships conduct MCM tasks in the Baltic Sea. Later Minister of Defence of Belgium S. Vandeput and the Lithuanian Defence Minister will meet in a bilateral format aboard the LNS Jotvingis to discuss security situation at the eastern and southern NATO borders, preparations for the upcoming NATO Summit in Warsaw, and bilateral military cooperation on land, in the air and at sea.
