Assurance measures discussed in Vilnius with the new Commander Joint Force Command Brunssum

On May 12 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas and Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lieutenant General Jonas Vytautas Žukas met with General Salvatore Farina, Commander of the Joint Force Command (JFC) Brunssum, on visit in Vilnius. The officials focused on the upcoming NATO Summit in Warsaw and the decisions foreseen to be taken to enhance defence of the eastern borders of the Alliance, primarily, the deployment of allied forces in the Baltic region. Other topics discussed at the meeting were the necessity to step up air defence, cooperation in exercises and training, command of forces, and other points.

In the evening of April 28 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas received a confirmation via phone call with Federal Minister of Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen that Germany is going to be in the lead of formation of a NATO battalion group for Lithuania.

On April 29 soldiers of the Grand Duchess Birutė Uhlan Battalion of the Mechanised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf depart to train in a certification battle group exercise in the United Kingdom.

 

Nearly 140-strong Lithuanian contingent preparing for standby for the European Union Battle Group (EU BG) in the second semester of 2016 will attend the certification exercise. The Lithuanian unit is formed by the 2nd Motorised Company of the Uhlan Battalion with the Weapons Platoon from the Heavy Weapons Company assigned.

On April 29 Major Povilas Cicėnas (Lithuanian Air Force) relinquished command of the international regional Combined Control and Reporting Centre (CRC) to Lieutenant Colonel Gatis Gailitis (Latvian Air Force).

 

“The Combined Control and Reporting Centre is one of the elements of the Baltic Air Policing Mission as it ensures security of not only Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian airspace but also the airspace of north-eastern flank of NATO. BALTNET still stands as an example of the most efficient cooperation showcasing unity of different nation for the sake of one goal,” Maj P.Cicėnas said at the change of command ceremony.

After a break of one year Public and Military Day returns to the capital. On May 14 a military village will deploy by the White Bridge of Vilnius where all services of the Lithuanian Armed Forces will present their most advanced equipment, weaponry and gear, and tell about their daily duties and challenges. The public will be offered opportunities to perform a range of military tasks and meet interesting interlocutors at 15min.lt debate club.

On April 26 NATO Defence Policy Directors meeting in Romania determined that the Alliance needed to reform for responding adequately to the threats emerging from east and south. The meeting also addressed the restructuring in NATO forces that could be necessary for countering the threat from Russia and ensuring collective security.

Portuguese F-16 “Fighting Falcon” to land in Šiauliai

On April 28 four F-16 “Fighting Falcon” fighter aircraft of the Portuguese Air Force will land in Šiauliai Air Base. The fighters will come from the Monte Real Air Base of the Portuguese Air Force to replace the current NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission rotation provided by the Royal Air Force of Spain. The detachments will change over at a formal ceremony on May 4.

On 27 April two US F-22 Raptor fighter aircraft landed at the Air Base of the Lithuanian Armed Forces in Šiauliai. It is the first time that the world‘s premier operational 5th generation fighters have been deployed to Lithuania. By training deployment of the aircraft the US demonstrates its steadfast and unshakeable commitment to the whole Europe.

On April 18-24 NATO fighter aircraft performing Air Policing tasks in the Baltic States were scrambled three times to intercept military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

Defence Policy Director for the Ministry of National Defence Vaidotas Urbelis discussed bilateral defence cooperation with Nick Gurr, Director of International Security Policy for the Ministry of Defence of the United Kingdom, on a visit in Vilnius this week. The meeting featured discussion on preparations for and objectives of the oncoming NATO Summit in Warsaw this July, the officials also addressed the enhancement of security of the Baltic States, assistance to Ukraine, relations with Russia and Belarus.
