From February 22 to 28 NATO fighter jets on duty in the Baltic States were scrambled once to identify and intercept aircraft of foreign countries in international airspace above the Baltic Sea.

On February 25 a team of military instructors, the majority of them serving with King Mindaugas Hussar Battalion, deployed to Ukraine. The Lithuanian team will continue Lithuania’s contribution to the U.S-led Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine and assist training regular units of Ukraine’s armed forces.

Operation Atalanta Medal awarded to a Lithuanian officer

Lieutenant (Navy) Remigijus Zabiela of the Lithuanian Navy was awarded Operation Atalanta Medal for his service as part of the EU NAVFOR-ATALANTA, European Union operation for countering piracy and armed robbery at sea.

 

“Be proud of this medal, it is recognition of your outstanding commitment, professionalism and efforts,” the EU NAVFOR Somalia Commander Rear Admiral Stefano Barbieri said when presenting the medals. Admiral also underscored that the awardees had truly contributed to the mission’s aim of strengthening maritime security in that wide and strategically significant sea area.

Joint statement on the Situation in Ukraine by the Swedish and Lithuanian Ministers of Defence

 

On February 18-19, Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas and Minister of Defence of Sweden Peter Hultqvist underscored the significance of defence reform for Ukraine at a meeting with Minister of Defence of Ukraine Army General Stepan Poltorak in Kiev.

On February 18-19 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas and Minister of Defence of Sweden will conduct a visit to Kiev (Ukraine) to meet with Minister of Defence Army General Stepan Poltorak and other high officials of Ukraine.

 

The meeting officials will discuss security situation in Eastern Ukraine, and assistance to Ukraine aimed at supporting the country’s development of its armed forces and defence reform.

On February 15 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas discussed Lithuania’s and Ukraine’s defence cooperation with Ambassador of Ukraine in Lithuania HE Volodymyr Yatsenkivskyi at a meeting at the Ministry of National Defence.

 

“Lithuania provides full political and practical support to Ukraine. Lithuania supports Ukraine’s security an s defence reform by contributing to projects of training Ukrainian soldiers on its own and together with NATO allies. The cooperation with Ukraine’s military personnel also allows Lithuanian soldiers to get valuable experience of countering an aggressor,” Minister J.Olekas said at the meeting with the Ambassador Ukraine.
