Deployment of NATO forces and military equipment in Lithuania is one of the aims of our defence policy that would facilitate security and defensibility of both, Lithuania and our entire region,” Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas said referring to the proposal of the U.S. Department of Defence to deploy heavy weaponry and equipment in Central and Eastern European NATO Allies, including Lithuania.

Lithuanian officer began service in the new naval EU operation in its HQ in Rome

Lithuania is joining the European Union-led Operation Naval Force in the Mediterranean (EUNAVFOR MED) by posting an officer to the headquarters of the operation in Rome, Italy. The Lithuanian officer began serving in the position of officer on duty at the Combined Operations Centre yesterday, May 28.

On May 29 the largest special operations forces Exercise Flaming Sword 2015 held in the Baltic Region this year was declared closed. The three-week exercise organised by the Lithuanian Special Operations Forces focused on interoperability and coordination between allied units thus enhancing and ensuring security of Lithuania and the Baltic Region. Lithuanian soldiers trained in the exercise alongside Danish, Estonian, Latvian, Polish, U.S., Norwegian, Swedish special forces personnel.

May 28, at the Baltic Defence Ministers meeting in Panevėžys Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas, Minister of Defence of Estonia Sven Mikser and Minister of Defence of Latvia Raimonds Vejonis highlighted the need of decisive action regarding the development of critical defence capabilities necessary for the Baltic States’ defence in light of increased threats. The Ministers agreed to consult with such strategic allies as the United States of America or Poland and have draft plans for the possible development of mid-range air defence system produced by this autumn.

On May 28 Lithuanianian Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas, Minister of Defence of Estonia Sven Mikser and Minister of Defence of Latvia Raimonds Vejonis will address regional security, development of joint Baltic capabilities, NATO measures of deterrence and other security and defence issues at a meeting in Panevėžys.

On May 18 through 24 fighter jets conducting the NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission were scrambled twice to intercept Russian military aircraft flying in international airspace over the Baltic Sea between mainland Russia and Kaliningrad Oblast.

Soldiers were injured at a training event of the Lithuanian Armed Forces

Early in the morning of May 25 five soldiers from NATO allied nations suffered heavy metal gas poisoning at a Lithuanian Armed Forces training event. Currently their condition is stable, the troops are undergoing symptomatic treatment and are observed. The troops’ nationality is not publicised on the basis of international agreements. An investigation has been launched to identify the causes of the incident.

Further underwater examination of the An-2 wreck possibly detected the body of one of the missing pilots

May 21, a thorough examination of the An-2 wreck lying on the Baltic seafloor  carried out from the outside of the aircraft at night has possibly led to finding the body of one of the missing pilots. The operation was carried out with underwater surveying video equipment of the LNS Kuršis mine countermeasures vessel and Klaipėda University.

On May at 4.10 p.m. the search operation for the two An-2 pilots on water surface was ended by decision of the commander of the Maritime Rescue and Coordination Centre of the Lithuanian Navy. The decision regarding an underwater search will be made in the nearest while.

 

The decision to end the above-surface search for the An-2 pilots was taken on the basis of long experience global practice and theoretical calculations.

On May 20 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas will familiarise with the initial results and course of the efforts to locate the missing An-2 and its crew during a visit to the Lithuanian Navy HQ.
