U.S. and Lithuanian ground troops improved skydiving skills at a combined parachute training event

On July 29 troops of the 173rd Airborne Brigade's 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment and the Lithuanian Land Force enhanced their skills at a parachute training event at the General Silvestras Žukauskas Training Range in Pabradė.

 

The event trained automatic opening parachute jumps. According to the exercise schedule, all the participants took off on a U.S. airplane from Šiauliai Airport and skydived over the territory of the General Silvestras Žukauskas Training Range. The U.S. soldiers attended the exercise together with representatives from Grand Duke Birutė Uhlan and the Lithuanian Grand Duke Butigeidis Dragoon Battalions and the Mechanised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf from the Lithuanian Land Force, and reconnaissance squads of the National Defence Volunteer Force.

New Defence Attaché of Finland accreditted to Lithuania

On July 29 Defence Attaches of Finland to Lithuania changed over at a formal ceremony at the Ministry of National Defence. Lieutenant Colonel Pekka Antti Juhani Sviili was replaced by Commander Jussi Voutilainen in the position.

 

At the ceremony Vice Minister of National Defence Marijus Velička presented to the outgoing Finland’s Defence Attaché to Lithuania LTC P. A. J. Sviili the National Defence System Medal of Merit for the development and enhancement of defence cooperation between Lithuania and Finland. “Recognition of the work you have done by conferring an honour is really gratifying. All services of the Lithuanian and the Finnish Armed Forces attended all sorts of combined exercises and multinational missions over my three years in office,” LTC P. A. J. Sviili said at the ceremony.

On July 28 Vice Minister of National Defence Antanas Valys presented the National Defence System Medal of Merit to the outgoing Defence Attaché to Lithuania Lieutenant Colonel Jean-Luc Lopez for his personal contribution to the development of cooperation between the French and the Lithuanian Armed Forces. The officer was representing the interest of the French Armed Forces in Lithuania in August 2011- July 2014.

On July 24 a formal change of command ceremony of the Chiefs of Defence of Lithuania was held at the Cathedral Square of Vilnius. The outgoing Chief of Defence Lieutenant General Arvydas Pocius who led the Lithuanian Armed Forces in 2009-2014 was formally replaced by Major General Jonas Vytautas Žukas.

Long-term project of mechanisation of the Lithuanian Land Force launched

The Ministry of National Defence is beginning a mechanisation programme to implement the National Defence System Development Programme 2014-2023 approved by the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania and to the end of strengthening and modernising the Lithuanian Land Force. In first phase of the programme two battalions of the Mechanised Infantry Brigade (MIB) Iron Wolf will be equipped with modern wheeled infantry fighting vehicles till 2020.

Lithuanian rotation actively preparing for standby for EU Battlegroup next year

50 members of the Grand Duchess Birutė Uhlan Battalion are continuing training for a standby for the European Union Nordic Battlegroup (EU BG) in the first semester of 2015 which is going to be formed by Ireland, Estonia, Latvia, Norway, Finland, and Sweden. In case of activation the EU BG will be ready for deployment into a region of crisis to render humanitarian assistance, complete peacekeeping and crisis response operations, support third states in countering terrorism, and to carry out other tasks.

Hungarian military personnel take part in NATO signal exercise in Lithuania

On July 14-18 military personnel of the Hungarian Armed Forces incorporated into NATO’s Deployable Communication and Information Systems Module (DCISM-E) are taking part in a communications training event in Lithuania with their equipment. The exercise is enhancing the abilities of DCISM personnel to deploy within the territory of Alliance on short notice and to ensure communications for NATO command post and subunits in the area of operation.

On July 15 a commemoration of the victory in the Battle of Tannenberg was held by the Lithuanian Armed Forces and the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. The commemoration included various events at the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania: educational games, creative workshops, demonstration of a film “The known unknown Tannenberg”, a display of medieval weaponry and armour, etc. The celebration culminated in a formal ceremony in Cathedral Square of Vilnius which featured a performance by the Honour Guard Company of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, salutes of an ancient cannon, an enactment of a medieval fight between a Lithuanian warrior and a crusader, a performance by mounted police dressed in historic uniforms.
