U.S. and Lithuanian military side by side will train coastal defence

On June 28 the 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade, U.S. Army in Europe (USAREUR), arrived at the Lithuanian Grand Duke Butigeidis Dragoon Battalion.

 

The U.S. military will be training various combat tasks, including a large-scale airborne landing operation, hand in hand with military personnel from the Dragoon Battalion. Nighttime training will be carried out alongside daytime training.

On June 29 personnel of the Lithuanian Special Operations Force’s Aitvaras squadron departed from the province of Zabul of Afghanistan. The Lithuanian military have transferred the responsibility for security in the province to local security forces thus successfully completing the task entrusted to them by NATO and leadership of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. Since 2007 Lithuanian Special Operations Squadron has been completing high-intensity combat assignments in Zabul province of Afghanistan as part of NATO’s ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) and trained for carrying out its duties a special rapid response company of Afghan National Police in Zabul.

On June 2 Defence Attachés of the United States to Lithuania will changeover at a formal ceremony at the Ministry of National Defence. Colonel Jeffrey L. Jennette will be replaced in the position by Lieutenant Colonel John C. Moore.

On June 27 Defence Policy Director of the Ministry of National Defence Dr. Vaidotas Urbelis underscored the necessity to continue enhancing security measures in the Baltic region at a meeting with Derek Chollet, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs (ISA), in Washington. “Deployment of NATO forces and augmented NATO’s Air Policing Mission in the Baltic States is an excellent demonstration of NATO solidarity in the context of the aggressive Russia’s policy. NATO measures have provided an adequate response to the current security situation, but NATO presence in the region should continue growing,” Dr. V.Urbelis said.

On June 9-21 patrol ship Aukštaitis (P14) and mine hunter and sweeper Skalvis (M53) of the Lithuanian Navy took part in the multinational mine countermeasures exercise BALTOPS 2014.

 

The maritime training event took place in the territorial waters and exclusive economic zones of Sweden and Denmark.

On June 26 the Defence Attachés of the Czech Republic in Lithuania rotated at a formal ceremony at the Ministry of National Defence. Colonel Zdenek Kubiček was replaced by Colonel Zdenek Postulka in the position. Vice Minister of National Defence Antanas Valys presented the Medal of Merit of the National Defence System to the outgoing official.

 

The accreditation ceremony was also attended by Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Lithuania Radek Pech, representatives of the Ministry of National Defence and the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

On June 24 Vice Minister of National Defence Marijus Velička met with Minister of Defence of Georgia Irakli Alasnia and Deputy Minister of Defence Mikheil Darchiashvili. The Defence Minister thanked M.Velička for Lithuania’s assistance and support to Georgia’s Euro-integration aspirations.

 

At the meeting with the Minister of Defence of Georgia the Lithuanian Vice Minister of National Defence reiterated Lithuania’s commitment to supporting Georgia in defence sector to the end of ensuring the continuity of Georgian defence reforms and enabling the country to seek a full-fledged NATO membership.

New rotation of U.S. troops arrived in Lithuania

On June 24 the 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment based in Grafenwoehr, Germany, from the 173rd Airborne Brigade arrived in the Lithuanian Air Force Base in Šiauliai to replace the U.S. company stationed with the Duke Vaidotas Mechanised Infantry Battalion.

 

The new rotation will continue training collective defence tasks with Lithuanian troops. Having landed at the Šiauliai Air Base, the U.S. troops further headed for the temporary station at the Duke Vaidotas Mechanised Infantry Battalion.

Vice Minister of National Defence M. Velička conducting work visit in Georgia, to attend a conference on security and defence

Vice Minister of National Defence Marijus Velička will be conducting a visit in Georgia on June 23-28. The Vice Minister will meet with Deputy Minister of Defence of Georgia Mikheil Darchiashvili, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs David Jalagania, and Head of the European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia Toivo Klaar while in Tbilisi on June 23-25, and will attend annual Georgian Defence and Security Conference in Batumi.

 

At the work meeting organised by request of Georgia’s Deputy Minister of Defence Mikheil Darchiashvili the Ministers will address issues of regional security, the agenda of Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic integration, and perspectives of bilateral defence cooperation. The Lithuanian Vice Minister’s visit schedule also includes trips to the Krtsanisi National Training Centre and the National Defence Academy in Gori.

Lithuanian officer deployed to a NATO mission in Kosovo

On June 23 a staff sergeant of the Movement Control Centre of the Lithuanian Armed Forces was deployed to the NATO-led peace support operation, Kosovo Force (KFOR). He will carry out a three-month tour of duty at the KFOR Joint Logistic Support Group headquartered in Pristina to contribute to a fluent movement of NATO forces in Kosovo.

 

During the tour of duty with KFOR the Lithuania officer will be in charge of planning and arranging transportation of troops and cargoes, mediating in border-crossing procedures, and for providing support in controlling troop movement on roads and at airports alongside his colleagues from other nations contributing to KFOR.
