Arms control experts of Russia and Belarus will conduct a visit in Lithuania

On June 4-5 arms control experts of Russia and Belarus will conduct an observation flight over the territory of Lithuania in AN-30B under the Open Skies Treaty. The visit will begin with the Air Base of the Lithuanian Air Force in Šiauliai.

 

The Open Skies Treaty, which is a critical instrument for international arms control through transparency and openness in military matters was ratified by the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania in 2004. The treaty stipulates implementation of observation flights over the territories of the parties to the agreement and order for exchanging information and completion of joint missions.

On June 9-20 Exercise Saber Strike 2014 conducted simultaneously in all three Baltic States will pull together the largest allied forces in Lithuania since joining NATO.

 

Danish participants of the exercise will bring CV 9035 fighting infantry vehicles, M113 tracked armoured carriers of G4 modification, Piranha infantry fighting vehicles, Duro armoured medical trucks, and other equipment via the Seaport of Klaipėda.

Exercise Flaming Sword 2014 that concluded last week gave particular focus to public-military cooperation. The exercise was organised by the Lithuanian Special Operations Forces in various cities in Lithuania and Latvia which gave an opportunity to cooperate with local administrative institutions and communities during the exercise. The training event also incorporated numerous participants from the State Border Guard Service, Fire and Rescue Department and the Public Police under the Ministry of the Interior.

On May 30 – June 1 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas took part in the Spring Session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly at the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania.

 

On June 1 Minister of National Defence J.Olekas and Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lieutenant General Arvydas Pocius delivered addresses at the session of the NATO PA Defence and Security Committee.

In the evening of 30 May NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen was awarded the Honorary Doctorate regalia of Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) at a ceremony at the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences.

Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas will take part in the Spring Session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (NATO PA) taking place at the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania on May 30-June 1. The event is expected to be attended by approximately 600 participants – parliamentarians from the 28 NATO member states, NATO PA associate countries, regional partners, delegations of the European Parliament and representatives of various international organisations. The Spring Session will also be attended by NATO Secretary General and Chairman of the North Atlantic Council Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

Allied air capabilities train in the Baltic airspace

On May 27-28 the 18th iteration of the Baltic Regional Training Event (BRTE XVIII) is taking place in the airspace of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland. The main actions of the NATO air training event are conducted in Latvia.

 

The BRTE XVIII focuses on the improvement of control of NATO’s air operations. In his iteration of the BRTE XVIII Eurofighter Typhoons of the Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom and Poland’s Mig-29s deployed on the NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission have joined air capabilities of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, the regular participants of the event.

On May 27-28 inspectors of the National Agency for Control and Inspections will carry out a visit to a designated area in the units of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

 

A team of military experts of Belarus will inspect the central part of the territory of Lithuania and training ranges of Gaižiūnai and Pabradė.

Personnel of the Lithuanian Special Operations Forces are inviting to attend Distinguished Visitors and Media Day of international Exercise Flaming Sword 2014 at the Gaižiūnų Training Range on May 30. The guests will be able to familiarise with the characteristics of the exercise, observe a demonstration programme, and view equipment and weaponry that was used for the event.
