Ambassador of Belgium and Vice Minister of National Defence M. Velička paid a visit to Šiauliai Air Base

On December 12 Ambassador of Belgium in Lithuania Peter Lescouhier paid a visit to the Air Base of the Lithuanian Air Force in Šiauliai where he met with the Belgian Air Contingent currently deployed on NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission. The guest also met with Vice Minister of National Defence Marijus Velička, Commander of the Lithuanian Air Force Major General Edvardas Mažeikis and Commander of the Air Base Lieutenant Colonel Vidmantas Raklevičius.

Troops of the Belgian Air Force presented the mission to the guests and invited to observe a scramble of F-16.

The four-month tour of duty of the Belgian troops that has begun in September is now approaching its end.

In the end of the year they will be replaced by air personnel of the United States of America that will be ensuring security in the Baltic airspace with four F-15 Eagle.

Military personnel of Belgium have been sent to carry out Baltic Air Policing tasks for the third time. The country was also the first to man the mission when it was launched on March 29, 2004, when the three Baltic States became members of NATO.

Next year NATO’s Air Policing mission in the Baltic States will celebrate the 10th anniversary.
