Chief of Defence of Lithuania visit members of the Lithuanian Armed Forces in Afghanistan

Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lieutenant General Arvydas Pocius and an accompanying delegation commenced a visit in Afghanistan on December 14, they are meeting with Lithuanian servicemembers deployed to the country, representatives of the leadership of NATO’s operation Afghanistan, and members of the local Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF).

 

The Chief of Defence is accompanied by Members of Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania Gediminas Jakavonis and Remigijus Ačas, Head of the Office of the Committee on National Security and Defence Vitalij Dmitrijev, Commander of the Lithuanian Air Force Major General Edvardas Mažeikis, Head of Military Police of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Lieutenant Colonel Gytis Kazokas, other representatives of the leadership of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

Largest NATO Special Operations Forces Exercise in 2013 concluded

The largest NATO Special Operations Forces exercise this year Cobra 2013 ended on November 29 after running for several weeks. The training event evaluated and certified Special Operations Component Command (SOCC) of NATO Response Force 2015 which also includes several Lithuanian Special Operations Forces (LITHSOF) representatives in positions of command. The exercise provided a national-level certification of the Polish Special Operations Forces with whom LITHSOF cooperates on a close basis. International certification of the SOCC will take place next year at Noble Sword 2014.

On November 28 Vice Minister of National Defence Marijus Velička will participate in a conference in Riga “The nearing decade of the Baltic States’ NATO membership: Achievements and Future Perspectives.”

 

The event will review the decade the Baltic countries have spent as members of the Alliance, the results and benefits, regional cooperation, and NATO public diplomacy.

Text of the opening speech

 

On November 26 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas delivered an opening speech at the Berlin Security Conference “Post-ISAF Afghanistan: New Challenges and Opportunities”.

 

Minister J.Olekas underscored in his speech that in post-ISAF Afghanistan the main challenges will be determined by the security situation. “If the perception of security in the country is lost, almost none of the achievements can be sustained. I want to believe that this will not be the case,” the Minister said.

New Defence Attaché of China accredited to Lithuania

On November 25 new Defence Attaché of China Senior Colonel Long Liu was accredited to Lithuania at the Ministry of National Defence. The official was welcomed in his new role by Vice Minister of National Defence Marijus Velička.

 

The accreditation ceremony was also attended by Ambassador of China in Lithuania Zengwen Liu, representatives of the Ministry of National Defence and the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

On November 25 Lithuania’s Minister of National Defence and his Baltic and Polish counterparts discussed issues of regional cooperation at a meeting in Warsaw, Poland.

 

“We are developing stronger cooperation with Poland, as we enhance regional cooperation and sustain strong relations among the three Baltic States and our Nordic neighbours. The multinational NATO’s exercise Steadfast Jazz 2013 that has taken place this autumn is a perfect example of the close cooperation we can boast of. We aim at having such exercises held regularly and to a similar extent,” Minister J.Olekas said at the meeting.

On Monday, November 25, Minister of National Defence of Lithuania Juozas Olekas will attend a meeting of the Baltic and Polish Defence Ministers in Warsaw, Poland, were issues of regional defence cooperation will be discussed.

 

At the meeting the discussions will focus on the issues to be addressed at the NATO Summit 2014 in the United Kingdom. The Defence Ministers will also look into using the mechanism of large-scope exercises for the implementation of the Connected Forces Initiative (CFI). CFI is tailored help Alliance nations remain interoperable as the operation in Afghanistan winds down.

On November 23 the 95th anniversary of the re-established Lithuanian Armed Forces was marked in Vilnius by a military parade of personnel and equipment in the Cathedral Square and a march down the Gediminas Avenue in Vilnius. Celebration in Vilnius was the culmination of a spectrum of commemorative events across Lithuania.

 

The celebratory formation and parade in Vilnius included over 500 military representing all the services – land, air, naval and special operations, and also a flag group of the Pennsylvania National Guard (PNG) celebrating its 20th anniversary of cooperation with the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

This year Lithuania will celebrate its 95th Armed Forces Day along with the 20th anniversary of cooperation between the Pennsylvania National Guard and the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

 

A formal commemorative ceremony to be held at the Palace of the Lithuanian Grand Dukes in Vilnius on November 22 will be attended by Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas, Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lieutenant General Arvydas Pocius, Commander of the Pennsylvania National Guard and Adjutant General of Pennsylvania Major General Wesley Craig, Ambassador of the United States of America in Lithuania Deborah A. McCarthy, representatives of Lithuania’s National Defence System, other state institutions, and the delegation of the Pennsylvania National Guard on visit in Lithuania.

Italian warship taking part in biodiesel certification program will pay a friendly visit to Klaipėda

On November 19 through 25 the Caio Duilio destroyer of the Italian Navy which also took part in NATO’s Response Force exercise Steadfast Jazz 213 earlier this month will be conducting a friendly visit in Klaipėda.

 

The technologically advanced warship in service with the Italian Navy since 2009 is unique as its engine runs on biodiesel. The ship is drawn into a naval biofuel certification project with a long-term goal of formulating a unique biofuel also suitable for aircraft and land vehicles.
