On November 28 Vice Minister of National Defence Antanas Valys and Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lieutenant General Arvydas Pocius met with Chief of Defence of Hungary General Tibor Benkő who arrived on a two-day formal visit in Lithuania.

 

“We wish to extend our gratitude to Hungary for the decision to deploy on NATO’s Air Policing mission in the Baltic States, a demonstration of the Alliance’s solidarity and readiness to deliver a collective response,” Vice Minister A.Valys said. The Vice Minister underlined that the Baltic States were continuously investing into the mission to enhance service conditions for Alliance personnel deployed to Šiauliai Air Base.

As Lithuania celebrates the 95thanniversary of the re-established of its Armed Forces, a delegation of the Pennsylvania National Guard (PNG) of the United States of America is conducting a visit to mark a coinciding date of a two decades-long cooperation between the PNG and the Lithuanian Armed Forces. The delegation comprises Vice Chief of National Guard Bureau Lieutenant General Joseph Lengyel, Commander of the Pennsylvania National Guard and Adjutant General of Pennsylvania Major General Wesley Craig, and other representatives of the PNG.

 

On November 21 the guest delegation met with Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas. Other meetings at the Ministry of National Defence with Lithuania’s military leadership followed: with Chief of Defence Lieutenant General Arvydas Pocius, Chief of the Joint Staff Brigadier General Vilmantas Tamošaitis, Chief of the Land Force HQ Colonel Vaidotas Malinionis, and with Commander of the National Defence Volunteer Force Col Romualdas Moldaris.

Lithuanian Special Operations Forces Squadron Aitvaras continue the mission in Afghanistan

Last troops of the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team of Afghanistan, a part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), were welcomed home in September. The mission in Ghor province of Afghanistan was closed, however, the Lithuanian Special Operations Forces (LITHSOF) Squadron Aitvaras continue service in the faraway land.

 

Personnel of Aitvaras continue carrying out combat operations in the south of Afghanistan to enhance security in the country and to create conditions for local population to take over the responsibility for their country gradually.

Russian arms control inspectors will be visiting Mechanised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf

On November 18-20 arms control inspectors of the Center for Arms Control, Energy and Environmental Studies of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation will conduct a verification visit to the Mechanised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf of the Lithuanian Armed Forces (Rukla, Jonava Distr.). The guests will estimate the accuracy of the information provided by the units, plans of weaponry and equipment deployment.

 

Russian military arms control experts will be visiting Lithuanian military units on the basis of the Vienna Document 2011 (VD11) of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

On 29 November Policy Director of the Ministry of National Defence Dr. Vaidotas Urbelis attended an EU Defence Policy Directors meeting in Brussels.

 

“Defence spending is a fundamental issue which will be decisive for the future of European defence: efficiency and visibility of defence, capability development, perspectives for the European defence industry,” Lithuanian Defence Policy Director V. Urbelis stated when discussing the future of the European Common Security and Defence Policy with his counterparts.

Annual Baltic exercise BALTIC HOST 13 commenced

October 31, annual Host Nation Support (HNS) exercise of the Baltic States BALTIC HOST 13 began. The annual exercise is a part of a larger NATO Response Force exercise STEADFAST JAZZ 13 this year.

 

BALTIC HOST 13 involves approximately 150 military and civilian members of various institutions from the three Baltic States, representatives of Bulgaria, Italy, U.S.A., U.K., the Netherlands, Norway, France, Slovenia, Turkey and Germany.

On October 29–31 Chief of Defence of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) Lieutenant General Gorancho Koteski is conducting a formal visit in Lithuania. On Thursday, October 30, Lt Gen G. Koteski met with Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas at the Ministry of National Defence, Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lieutenant General Arvydas Pocius, and other representatives of the MOD and the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

 

The meeting officials addressed bilateral military cooperation of Lithuanian and FYROM, its perspectives, relations of NATO and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, the countries’ participation in multinational operations, and other points.

On October 29 mechanised infantry company of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Algirdas Battalion deployed to Dravsko Pomorskie Training Range in Poland where their training for the largest NATO Response Force exercise STEADFAST JAZZ 13 (SFJZ13) within a multinational unit has already begun.

 

Lithuania has deployed approximately 140 troops to take part in Exercise STEADFAST JAZZ 13 at Dravsko Pomorskie Training Range in a multinational unit alongside NATO member states’ and partners’ forces. Lithuanian military of General Romualdas Giedraitis Artillery Battalion and the Lithuanian Special Operations Forces who will serve with the Joint and Tactical Air Control Parties have been already deployed to the same location too.

Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas conducted his first-ever visit to the Joint Force Headquarters – Pennsylvania (JFHQ-PA) and met with Commander of the Pennsylvania National Guard and Adjutant General of Pennsylvania Major General Wesley E. Craig on October 26 during his duty call to the United States of America. The meeting focused on the approaching 20t anniversary of PNG-Lithuanian cooperation and other topics.
