Millennium of the Name of Lithuania marked in SHAPE

imgMovies of Lithuanian cinema were demonstrated in the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) near Mons (Belgium) from November 9 to 11. The event was arranged by the Lithuanian Community in SHAPE to commemorate the Millennium of the Name of Lithuania. Members of communities of NATO countries and partners had the opportunity to see seven movies directed by Lithuanian artists in the current decade. The programme comprised movies of diverse genres - poetic documentary, historical, shorts films and cartoon.

 

Documentary of director Arūnas Matelis „Before flying back to the Earth" was especially notied. The audience could join an assistance fund-raiser campaign and the collected money would be donated ton oncologically ill child in a community, a district or a city. „Demonstration of the movie contributed to the Cinema Odyssey of Kindness 2009 organised by film studio NOMINUM. It was a pleasure to contribute to the campaign which is truly important and meaningful to us," said organiser of the event Dovilė Kiselytė.

Lithuanian Defence Minister and Minister for Kosovo Security Forces signed cooperation agreement

imgOn November 30 Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė met with the Minister for Kosovo Security Forces Fehmi Mujota.

 

During the meeting the Ministers agreed on priorities of further cooperation and on potential sectors of the Kosovo Security Forces to receive Lithuania's support. The meeting Ministers also remarked the noticeable advance in stabilisation of security situation in the Republic of Kosovo as well as in formation of democratic future institutions of the country on the basis of the variety of ethnic groups. The officials also stressed the success of the recent municipal elections the second tour of which are coming in December.

On November 30 Minister for the Kosovo Security Force Fehmi Mujota will visit Ministry of National Defence during his formal visit in Vilnius. The guest will meet with the Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė to discuss political and security situation in Kosovo, international operations conducted in Kosovo, bilateral cooperation of Lithuania and Kosovo, and other points.

 

R. Juknevičienė and F. Mujota on behalf of the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence and the Ministry for the Kosovo Security Forces will sign a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation, MoU will provide for development of bilateral relations by arranging meetings of representatives of institutions responsible for ensuring international security and stability, education and training, crisis management, international operations, civilian emergency planning, as well as by participation in joint discussions and consultations, and conducting interinstitutional exchange of information.

Points of defence cooperation addressed in the meeting of the Baltic Chiefs of Defence

imgOn November 27 two-day meeting of the Baltic Chiefs of Defence concluded in General Adolfas Ramanauskas Warfare Training Centre (Nemenčinė). It was attended by Lithuanian Chief of Defence Maj. Gen. Arvydas Pocius, Commander of the Latvian Armed Forces Maj. Gen. Juris Maklakovs and Commander of the Estonian Defence Forces Lt. Gen. Ants Laaneots.


The main attention during the meeting was dedicated for the matters of the Baltic defence cooperation. The Baltic CHODs addressed readiness of the BALTBAT for standby in NRF in the first half of 2010 as well as other possible modes of the unit's employment in the future. Top-ranking defence officers also discussed NATO's Baltic Air-policing mission, development and officer education at the Baltic Defence College, shared ideas about participation in international operations.

Today, November 26, meeting of the Baltic Chiefs of Defence will begin in General Adolfas Ramanauskas Warfare Training Centre in Nemenčinė (Vilnius distr.). The meeting will last for two days with attendance of the Lithuanian Chief of Defence Maj. Gen. Arvydas Pocius, Chief of Defence of Latvia Maj. Gen. Juris Maklakovs and Chief of Defence of Estonia Lt. Gen. Ants Laaneots.

Meeting of the Baltic Military Committee will be chaired by the Lithuanian Chief of Defence Maj. Gen. Arvydas Pocius.

November 25, students of Senior Staff Officer Course of the Baltic Defence College - future generals and officers to hold the highest leading positions in defence ministries and the armed forces - visited Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania.

 

The guests who came to familiarise with the fundamental principles of security and defence policy of Lithuania were met by the Chief of Defence of Lithuania Maj. Gen. Arvydas Pocius.

Hand-made caps from Lithuania will give warmth during severe winter for five thousand Afghan children

imgOn November 25, peacekeepers of the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT-10) distributed winter caps that people of Lithuania knitted and delivered via a campaign „Warm caps for children of Afghanistan".

 

Accompanied by representatives of provincial Education Department PRT-10 members toured three schools where around 1,5 thousand Afghan children receive education. Peacekeepers spent time communicating with pupils and presented them with caps from Lithuania.

 

Some schools in the capital Chaghcharan are closed because of low temperature - they will receive the caps from representatives of Ghowr Education Department.

The supreme religious leader of Ghowr read lecture on Islam for Lithuanian peacekeepers

imgNovember 21, Director of Department of Religious Affairs of Ghowr mullah Mohammad Shah Majidi was invited to the camp of the Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan PRT to read a lecture about the philosophy, core principles and religious festivals of the Islamic religion.

 

„Military and civilian personnel of the Lithuanian-led PRT represent 8 countries - each with its own customs, cultural peculiarities, and religion. Our aim is understand each other to attain cooperation as effective as possible. Of course, we have to be just as well aware of and understand culture, religion and customs of the country we are conducting the mission in and respect them," - said Commander PRT-10 Col. Gediminas Macijauskas. Commander also added representatives of Ghowr administration tend to emphasise the locals Afghans' appreciation of the respect PRT personnel show for their country's customs and traditions. According to Col. G.Macijauskas, it is an important factor determining warm relations between the PRT and local community.

imgNovember 24, Defence Attachés accredited to Lithuania met at MoND to address international defence cooperation of Lithuania, activities and plans of the Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan PRT. Transport Vice Minister Arūnas Štaras introduced to the Defence Attachés the opportunity to transport shipments for the NATO operation in Afghanistan via Lithuania.

 

According to the Vice Minister, infrastructure of Klaipėda Seaport and Lithuanian railways could serve for transportation of freights to Afghanistan.

SJSA project completed in Ghowr

On November 22 buildings of Appeal Court and General Procurator's Office were formally transferred to the local administration in Chaghcharan, capital of Ghowr, during a ceremony marking completion of the Lithuanian Government's and the European Commission's project for the development of administrative capacity of provincial justice sector.

 

The ceremony was attended by the Head of the Lithuanian Special Mission in Afghanistan Dainius Junevičius, Governor of Ghowr Sayed Mohammad Iqbal Munib, Commander Chaghcharan PRT-10 Col. Gediminas Macijauskas, representatives of the Lithuanian Special Mission, the EU Police Mission, and of Japan, cooperating with the Lithuanian-led PRT, leadership of provincial administration.
