Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė visit Kosovo

On June 25 Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė and delegation will go to Kosovo to take part in a re-deployment ceremony of the Lithuanian platoon that had successfully served in NATO operation in Kosovo (KFOR) for ten years on a rotation basis.

June 23, Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė met the Ambassador of the Order of Malta Douglas Graf von Saurma-Jeltsch in Vilnius.

 

The Ambassador extended gratitude for the Minister for the support Lithuanian Armed Forces had been providing in the „Christmas Soup" campaigns throughout the country and expressed his hopes that the Armed Forces will continue contributing to the initiative. R.Juknevičienė affirmed her sincere support to the initiative and that „Christmas Soup" campaigns will continue receiving support of the Lithuanian Armed Forces despite the economical slowdown preventing financing of new projects.

Troops of Air Defence Battalion trained with „Stinger

June 10, soldiers of Lithuanian Air Force Air Defence Battalion trained to shoot down air-born targets using aircraft defence missile „Stinger" system, Denmark, military area near Gniben. Lithuanians succeeded to hit all the targets launched.

Denmark hosted the exercise of live firing for the second time. Last year soldiers were firing at unmanned aircrafts whereas this year they were aiming at missiles for a first time.

June 18, award ceremony of Tadas Dambrauskas' Photography Contest „Lithuanian Armed Forces in Photography 2008-2009" took place in Arkos Art Gallery. Certificates and prizes will be given for the winners of the contest by the Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė, the special prize of the contest will be awarded by the Chief o Defence Lt. Gen. Valdas Tutkus.

NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer visited Lithuanian PRT-9 in Afghanistan

On June 18 NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer paid a visit to Chaghcharan PRT-9 operated by Lithuania in Ghowr province of Afghanistan. The guest appreciated professionality of civilian and military peacekeepers of PRT-9 in conducting provincial reconstruction and fulfilling Lithuania's international commitments in Afghanistan.

 

While visiting Chaghcharan J. de Hoop Scheffer was escorted by the PRT-9 military personnel and diplomats of Lithuania to the Training Centre of Civilian Personnel of Ghowr, local girls' school, the Provincial Governor's Office; he also communicated with PRT command and troops, and members of governmental organisations of other states residing in the compound of PRT-9.

Outgoing Defence Attaché of Turkey awarded the Medal of Merit

imgJune 22, a ceremony will be held a the Ministry of National defence to bestow the Medal of Merit on the Defence Attaché of Turkey Col. Muammer Inar after his term of office in Lithuania.

The top-level medal of the National defence System will be given to Col. M. Inar for his merits and personal contribution in developing cooperation between Lithuania and Turkey.

Winners of „Lithuanian Armed Forces in Photography 2008-2009“

imgJune 18, award ceremony of Tadas Dambrauskas' Photography Contest „Lithuanian Armed Forces in Photography 2008-2009" will take place in Arkos Art Gallery.

87 professional photographers of Lithuanian press submitted their works for the jury of the contest along with amateurs, military and civilians, and foreign photography artists. Pictures taken in 2008-2009 were divided into two subcategories - professional and amateur. Around 800 pictures were presented for the contest.

Baltic States assert determination to ensure efficiency of BALTBAT's rotation period in NRF-14 in 2010 despite economic crisis

imgLithuanian, Latvian, and Estonian Defence Ministers discussed points of defence cooperation and stressed the importance of the Baltic contribution to the NATO Response Force, Riga (Latvia), June 16.

The Baltic Battalion was evaluated as ready for the duty in NRF-14 after the „Baltic Eagle 09" exercise coming to an end in Latvia. BALTBAT is planned to rotate to the NATO Response Force (NRF-14) in the first half of 2010.

June 17, Stanisław Jerzy Komorowski, Undersecretary of the Polish Ministry of Defence for defence policy, will come on a one day working visit to Vilnius.

 

The Polish guest will meet with the Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė, Vice Minister Vytautas Umbrasas, Undersecretary for Defence Policy and International Relations Andrius Krivas. In the meetings projects of bilateral and multilateral defence cooperation will be discussed, relevant issues of regional security will be addressed, central points of NATO and the EU security policy agenda will be touched upon.

Athletes of Lithuanian Armed Forces - vice champions of the 49th World Military Basketball Championship

imgJune 14, Basketball Select Team of the Lithuanian Armed Forces became vice champions of the 49th World Military Basketball Championship held in Klaipėda. Lithuanians lost gold medal to the Greek team. Results of the finals which took place in „Neptūnas" Sports Arena of Klaipėda were 69:86 on behalf of the Greek athletes.

USA team won bronze of the championship after a match against Kazakhstan team resulting 97: 90.
