17th anniversary of Lithuanian national defence system reestablishment

April 25 is the 17th anniversary of the National Defence Department establishment and the beginning of the independent Lithuania's national defence system formation. On commemoration of event digest ”Krasto apsauga 2005" will be represented and video film ”9 letters from Afghanistan" shown in the Ministry of National Defence. The commemoration will be attended by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania Gediminas Kirkilas, National Defence Minister Juozas Olekas, Army Commander General Major Valdas Tutkus, and other representatives of the national defence system and armed forces.

Troops of the fifth rotation deployed to the Afghanistan mission

On April 26 the fifth Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT-5) for Ghowr will be deployed to Afghanistan. The Deployment ceremony will take place at the Grand Duke Kestutis Motorised Infantry Battalion (Taurage district). The authorities of the MoND and Lithuanian Forces leadership, authorities of Taurage district, and relatives of the soldiers will gather to wish them farewell and good luck in the mission.

The first PSI air interdiction exercise in Lithuania

International air interdiction exercise under the Proliferation Security Initiative will take place on April 26 with representatives from more than 20 countries as participants and observers.

NATO mine hunters and rescuers confer in Lithuania for the first time

imgToday, April 23, meeting of members of NATO Minesweepers unit begins with 50 officers from 10 NATO countries navy staffs as participants. Meeting participants will discuss results of the activity and future plans of the units as well as revue the up-to-date information about the mine clearance equipment and its tendencies. This is the first precedent of such format meeting in Lithuania. The event will continue till April 27.

The largest rescue exercise of the year will take place in the Baltic Sea on April 23 - 28. Lithuanian Navy patrol Storm class vessel ”Selis" (P32), led by Captain Lieutenant Laimonas Banys, will participate in the exercise in the Danish waters southeast from Bornholm Island too.

Special course held in the Artillery Battalion for Latvian soldiers was completed

imgToday, on April 20, Basic Forward observers' course for Latvian soldiers was completed in the Motorised Infantry Brigade ”Iron Wolf" General Romualdas Giedraitis Artillery Battalion. The course was opened on March 14 in the Artillery Battalion in Rukla (Jonava district), and from April 16 to 20 the trainees were fulfilling combat firing tasks in the Central Polygon of Lithuanian Forces in Pabrade.

”Kursis" (M51) will take part in mine clearance exercise ”SQEX 07" in Estonia

imgFrom April 20 to May 10 Lithuanian Naval Force minesweeper vessel ”Kursis" (M51) will take part in mine clearance exercise ”SQEX 07" in Estonia. The vessel will participate in the exercise led by Captain Lieutenant Giedrius Auksorius in composition of Baltic squadron BALTRON. The vessel crews from the Baltic States will drill their actions during the exercise with special attention to preparation to operate in NATO Mine Countermeasures units.

Second Lithuanian platoon came back from mission in Kosovo

imgFormal homecoming ceremony of KFOR-15 Platoon soldiers returning from the peace support mission in the province of Kosovo of the Republic of Serbia will take place by the National Defence Volunteer Force headquarters on April 17. KFOR-15 Platoon was formed on the basis of professional and volunteer troops from Vilnius, Trakai, Anyksciai, Ignalina, and Svencionys companies of the 8thUnit of the National Defence Volunteer Force Great Battle District. Professional and volunteer soldiers of NDVF 2nd and 5th units also served in the platoon.
