Lithuanian Special Operations Unit completes exercise

imgThe Lithuanian Special Operations Unit ended on Friday a large training session that involved neutralization of mock terrorist groups and release of hostages on land and at sea. The Lithuanian Defense Ministry said that the Aug. 31-Sept. 15 exercise was attended by all five SOU elements - troops of SOU headquarters, Special Operations Service, Vytautas the Great Jaegers Battalion, the Naval Submarine Actions Team and helicopters of the Air Force Special Operations Force, as well as representatives of the Military Police.

Baltic States Ministers' Joint Communique

The Minister of Defence of the Republic of Estonia, the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Latvia, the Minister of National Defence of the Republic of Lithuania, as the Ministerial Committee, having met in Jūrmala, Latvia on August 29-30, 2006, expressed the will to strengthen the Baltic defence co-operation and agreed on common principles and long-term strategic goals in fostering this process.

Lithuania's Iron Wolf brigade joining Danish division

The Motorized Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf of Lithuania's Armed Forces is being assigned to a Land Force division of NATO ally Denmark. A memorandum on affiliation was signed in the Danish city of Haderslev on August 31 by commanders of Lithuanian and Danish armed forces, Major General Valdas Tutkus and General Hans Jesper Helsio. The Lithuanian army's Field Forces Commander Brigadier General Arvydas Pocius and his Danish counterpart, Major General Paul Kierskou, also signed specific project directions providing for common military events and a plan of exercises. The signing ceremony was observed by Lithuanian and Danish ministers of defense, Juozas Olekas and Soren Gade.

Lithuanian defmin to meet Baltic colleagues in Latvia

Lithuanian Defense Minister Juozas Olekas will attend a meeting of Baltic defense ministers in Jurmala, Latvia, on Wednesday. Olekas, Atis Slakteris of Latvia and Jurgen Ligi of Estonia will discuss three-party cooperation among the three Baltic states and its future.

Lithuania's Iron Wolf brigade readying to join Danish division

In June 2005, a working group, formed from members representing the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence, the Defence Staff and the Lithuanian Armed Force Staff launched the process in relation to harmonisation of a variety of legal acts and military documents within a memorandum between the Danish and Lithuanian Ministries of Defence on the attachment of the Motorised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf of the Lithuanian Armed Forces to a Danish division and rotation of Lithuanian staff officers to the Danish division headquarters. After Lithuania became a member of NATO in 2004, the country's Armed Forces had to integrate into the Alliance's military structures as well. Seeking further military development, the path of integration into the Danish Land Force division was chosen. Lithuania and Denmark are linked by partnership in the field of defence almost since the restoration of Lithuania's independence and the start of establishment of the Armed Forces.

Land Force Commander of the Kingdom of Sweden visit Lithuania

General Major Sverker Goranson, Land Force Commander of Kingdom of Sweden, visited Lithuania on invitation of Commander of Lithuanian Land Force Brigadier General Arvydas Pocius, 16-18 August. It was the first cognitive visit to Lithuania of the General in the office as Commander. Thursday Commander of Lithuanian Land Force Brigadier General Arvydas Pocius met with the Swedish General in the Land Force Headquarters where he introduced to the guest the history of Lithuanian Land Force establishment and its tasks.

High–ranking NATO and US officials congratulated the Lithuanian Minister of National Defence

On Wednesday, 16 June, the new Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas received letters of congratulation from NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and US Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld. In his letter the NATO Secretary General underlines that Mr Olekas's appointment coincides with a period when NATO and Lithuania's agendas are full of tasks. In his words, the Alliance's member will have much work to do while preparing for the awaiting NATO Summit in Riga, further transforming forces, leading responsible operations and giving response to challenges of terrorism.

Lithuania to hold a joint navy exercise STORMEX '06

imgOn 7-12 August a joint navy exercise STORMEX'06 will be held in the Lithuanian territorial waters in the Baltic Sea. The exercise will be a bilateral Lithuanian-Latvian training naval session. The Lithuanian Navy will be represented by patrol boats P32 Selis and P33 Skalvis. Latvia will attend the exercise with patrol vessels P02 Lode and P04 Bulta. During the exercise, participants will improve their naval skills. The exercise will include firing at air and naval targets, manoeuvring within the formation, search and rescue operations, etc. Much focus will be on practical application of NATO procedures.

Lithuania expands its support to Democratic Control of Armed Forces development

Ministry of National Defence of the Republic of Lithuania and Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces, DCAF, signed cooperation program covering joint events for 2007-2006, committed for extension of armed democratic control and for Security Sector reforms in Lithuania, Ukraine, Moldova, Afghanistan, and other countries. Cooperation plan was signed by the Secretary for International Relations and Defence Policy Renatas Norkus and the Chairman Assistant of Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces Philipp Fluri staying in Vilnius.
